Surveillance cameras and camera masts: when are they worth it and where are the limits?
Camera surveillance is standard in perimeter protection on many commercial and industrial sites. But fixed surveillance cameras and expensive camera masts have structural weaknesses. We show what matters technically and when the surveillance drone is the more economical choice.

Why surveillance cameras alone are rarely enough.
Anyone investing in camera surveillance expects security. In practice, however, fixed surveillance cameras at the perimeter often fall short of expectations. Three structural weaknesses that can hardly be solved with camera technology alone.
Cameras without AI do not prevent break-ins
Pure recording documents an incident but does not prevent it. Without AI-supported intrusion detection with person and vehicle recognition, the guard at the gatehouse is left alone with dozens of monitors. Nobody watches all cameras at once.
Maintenance is neglected
Installers charge well for the installation, but ongoing maintenance is often neglected. Cameras fail due to spiders, dirt or deliberate tampering. Without real-time monitoring nobody notices that a camera has gone blind.
Fixed means perimeter only, plus an airspace gap
Fixed cameras only cover the defined perimeter and do not protect against insiders on the site. From the air they can also be spied on or bypassed. The airspace remains an open flank.
Camera technology in detail: what surveillance cameras can and cannot do.
In camera surveillance there are basically two camera types. EO or daylight cameras deliver detailed color images and are excellent for identifying people. At night, however, they need additional lighting, otherwise they see nothing. IR or thermal cameras, on the other hand, detect heat signatures and work even in complete darkness, fog or bad weather. They are less suitable for identifying a person. In practice both types are combined so that day and night operation are reliably covered.
What matters is this: every camera should work with AI-based intrusion detection. Person and vehicle recognition, and license plate recognition at barriers, turn pure recording into an alarm-based system. Without AI, surveillance cameras are good for documentation after the fact but poor at prevention. They do not prevent break-ins because nobody permanently watches all monitors. We therefore recommend drawing up a security concept to analyze risks and weak points and place camera technology efficiently.
Technically, several parameters matter for surveillance cameras: resolution, field of view and optical and digital zoom determine how much area is captured sharply. Dome cameras can rotate and actively track a target. For outdoor use, extra functions such as wipers and de-icing are important so the camera does not go blind in rain, snow and frost. Anyone who skimps on field of view or resolution gets images on which nothing can be identified later.
A frequently underestimated problem is maintenance. Installers charge well for installing surveillance cameras, but ongoing care is often neglected. Cameras fail due to spiders, dirt or deliberate tampering. Without real-time monitoring nobody notices until it is too late. Working camera surveillance therefore needs continuous monitoring of the system's condition, not just one-time installation.
For surveillance cameras to work at all, camera masts are needed. They route power, network and cabling to the camera and place it high up and hard to reach. This enlarges the field of view and better protects the camera against tampering. However, tall masts with civil works, power and network connection are expensive and laborious. And they have an open flank: from the air, cameras can be spied on, tampered with or simply bypassed. In extreme cases a bucket placed over the camera is enough, and the expensive system is blind. This is exactly where airspace security comes in, for example via our Security Dome for drone detection.
The origin of the hardware is also security-relevant. There are European and Asian manufacturers that differ not only in price but also in risk profile. Security-critical is the question of whether a device sends data abroad without control or contains hidden radio chips. Before deployment in a security-critical environment we recommend a pentest, consistently blocking any communication abroad and checking for undocumented radio modules. Security Airline advises here in a manufacturer-neutral, security-oriented way, without promoting a specific brand.
Last but not least, fixed cameras are limited in range: they only monitor the fixed perimeter and do not protect against insiders who are already on the site. Add to this data protection and works council co-determination, which must be properly regulated for any camera surveillance of employee areas.
At Security Airline we therefore work with multi-layer concepts and frequently deploy battery-powered motion detectors instead of blanket camera masts. These sensors are considerably cheaper and can be installed without civil works. Combined with the surveillance drone a redundant system emerges: when a sensor triggers, the drone automatically flies to the marked spot and checks the alarm zone. That way you achieve a higher level of security at lower cost than with camera masts as the sole technology. Existing cameras can continue to be used and integrated into the concept.

How do I secure my site more economically than with camera masts alone?
Camera surveillance is one building block, not the whole answer. Instead of placing expensive camera masts everywhere, we combine intelligent sensors with a surveillance drone. That is multi-layer, redundant and in most cases cheaper.
Aerial perspective instead of a fixed mast position
The surveillance drone is not tied to a mast position. From the air it also sees people hiding in blind spots or in the bushes, and checks areas that no camera captures.
Lower cost than camera masts
Instead of many masts with civil works, power and network connection, we rely on battery-powered sensors and a drone. That saves the expensive infrastructure and is often cheaper than blanket camera masts as a single technology.
AI detection and airspace protection
Person and vehicle recognition by AI turns recording into prevention. Complemented by airspace security, we close the gap through which fixed cameras are spied on or bypassed.
Multi-layer protection instead of a single technology.
You do not have to replace existing surveillance cameras. We integrate them into a multi-layer concept of drone, sensors and control center that complements camera surveillance with exactly the components fixed technology cannot deliver.

Arrow-401 LR drone and docking station
Purpose-built drone system with redundant communication electronics and a large UPS. You rely on the drone to replace other solutions dependably. Off-the-shelf drones lack this technology.

VdS-certified emergency and service control center
Alarms are handled by trained pilots on the customer side, such as the plant fire brigade, or in a VdS-certified control center. Essential for a high quality level and reliable processes, even during a power outage.

Flight Automation Center with AI
Our own secure flight automation software with intrusion AI. Controls the drone automatically, plans irregular patrols and integrates with existing sensors such as motion detectors.
Why simply buying cameras is not enough.
There are many providers that sell you expensive surveillance cameras and camera masts and then neglect maintenance. You want to focus on your business and not deal with ten pieces of the puzzle made up of hardware, cabling, monitoring and approvals. Security Airline takes care of these pieces for you.

How much do you save per year?
Calculate in 30 seconds what you save each year when you replace your classic guard service with an autonomous surveillance drone.
Autonomous. Weatherproof.
Ready around the clock.
The Arrow-401 LR drone system launches on its own, when an alarm is triggered or at predefined patrol intervals. The system is fully operational at night, in wind or in sub-zero temperatures.
The rugged, VdS-certified drone is charged, protected and monitored in the integrated docking station. It handles climate control, telemetry and maintenance monitoring and thus ensures uninterrupted operation.
The result: less personnel effort, higher deployment frequency and significantly lower operating costs, especially for large, hard-to-see areas without permanent guard staffing.
