Protecting railway lines from copper theft: how does a surveillance drone secure tracks and cables?
Railway lines are linear, extensive critical infrastructure and can hardly be monitored across their entire length. Cable theft, vandalism and sabotage lead to line closures and high consequential damage. An autonomous surveillance drone patrols long sections quickly from the air.

Why monitoring a railway line is so difficult.
Railway lines stretch over many kilometers, often through remote, poorly lit and freely accessible terrain. Valuable copper in signal and overhead line cables makes them a target. Three structural weaknesses that can hardly be solved with classic technology.
Linear line hard to monitor
A railway line is not a single point but linear and extensive. Blanket guarding over kilometers is hardly feasible in terms of staff or technology. Long sections remain without any deterrence at the track.
Cable theft with line closures
The theft of copper signal and overhead line cables interrupts the power supply and signaling. The result is line closures, delays, high damage and a considerable safety risk in operations.
Fixed technology too expensive and patchy
Fixed cameras cover long lines poorly. Anyone who wants to secure every kilometer with permanently installed technology pays enormous costs and still keeps gaps. An economical solution looks different.
Protecting railway lines: linear infrastructure in detail.
Railway lines and rail facilities are part of a country's critical infrastructure. They are different from a closed company site: a line is linear, runs over many kilometers and passes through fields, forests, tunnels and the outskirts of towns. It is exactly this extent that makes protection so demanding, because someone can step onto the track at almost any point.
The biggest threat is cable theft, often known as copper theft on the railway. Signal and overhead line cables contain valuable copper. When a cable is removed, not only is material value lost, but massive consequential damage arises: signaling fails, overhead lines are dead, operations stop. Add to that vandalism, sabotage and unauthorized entry onto the tracks, which itself poses a considerable safety risk.
The consequences are expensive and visible: line closures, delays across the entire network, high repair costs and a loss of trust among passengers and partners. A single night-time intervention on an unobserved section can throw an entire day of traffic into disarray.
Fixed cameras reach their limits here. A camera covers a fixed field of view, but a line consists of many kilometers. To cover an entire rail facility with permanently installed technology would require an enormous number of cameras, masts, cables and power connections. That is very expensive and still keeps blind spots, especially at night and in poor visibility.
At Security Airline we therefore rely on a different approach. The Arrow-401 LR surveillance drone with thermal camera and AI patrols long sections quickly from the air. From the aerial perspective the area covered on the ground is very large, and even people hiding in the bushes or on the embankment are reliably detected with the thermal camera.
Irregular patrols are the key to deterrence. Anyone who wants to scout out a line cannot rely on fixed times. At known hotspots we combine the drone with battery-powered sensors. When a motion detector triggers, the drone automatically flies to the marked spot, illuminates the site and verifies the situation. Each of our detections uses AI-based intrusion detection that reliably distinguishes people from animals and harmless movement.
Alarm handling takes place in a VdS-certified emergency and service control center. This ensures that every real alarm is handled professionally and according to clear processes, around the clock and even during a power outage. We recommend planning protection within a multi-layer security concept that systematically analyzes risks and hotspots along the line.
Rail facilities are not only at risk during regular operations. Especially during construction phases and at temporary facilities, for example during line expansion or refurbishment, material, machinery and freshly laid cables lie exposed. The drone can be deployed flexibly to such temporary hotspots without having to install technology permanently. It thus complements classic perimeter protection and open-area security where fixed installations are not economical.
Depending on the operator and their significance, railway lines fall under the rules for critical infrastructure. Anyone investing here should know the applicable requirements. We give an overview of obligations and framework in our article on the KRITIS laws. The surveillance drone is not off the shelf: it is the purpose-built surveillance drone based on the Arrow-401, tailored to protecting linear infrastructure.

How does a surveillance drone protect long railway sections economically?
The core element of a multi-layer, redundant security concept is a robot. We use drones instead of conventional ground-based security robots because they are ideal for linear infrastructure such as railway lines:
Long sections from the air
Thanks to the aerial perspective the drone covers long line sections quickly. With the thermal camera, people on the embankment or in the bushes are reliably detected at night too.
No fixed technology per kilometer
Instead of expensive cameras, masts and cables along the whole line, the drone flies to where it is needed. That lowers costs and closes the gaps of fixed technology.
Irregular AI patrols
Large areas are scanned in a short time using AI. Irregular patrols build up a high level of deterrence against cable theft, vandalism and sabotage.
One solution, three components.
Our software, developed specifically for a high degree of automation, controls the surveillance drone largely automatically. Many flights and smart AI raise the chance of detecting offenders at the track early, before cables are removed.

Arrow-401 LR drone and docking station
Purpose-built drone system with redundant communication electronics and a large UPS. You rely on the drone to replace other solutions dependably. Off-the-shelf drones lack this technology.

VdS-certified emergency and service control center
Alarms are handled by trained pilots on the customer side, such as the plant fire brigade, or in a VdS-certified control center. Essential for a high quality level and reliable processes, even during a power outage.

Flight Automation Center with AI
Our own secure flight automation software with intrusion AI. Controls the drone automatically, plans irregular patrols and integrates with existing sensors such as motion detectors.
Why simply buying a drone is not enough.
There are many drone companies that want to sell you expensive hardware and an expensive approval process. Then you have to hire several pilots. You want to protect your rail facilities and not deal with the ten pieces of the puzzle needed to run an airline. That takes years of experience. Security Airline takes care of all the pieces of the puzzle for you.
150,000+ surveillance flights

How much do you save per year?
Calculate in 30 seconds what you save each year when you replace your classic guard service at rail facilities with an autonomous surveillance drone.
Autonomous. Weatherproof.
Ready around the clock.
The Arrow-401 LR drone system launches on its own, when an alarm is triggered or at predefined patrol intervals. The system is fully operational at night, in wind or in sub-zero temperatures.
The rugged, VdS-certified drone is charged, protected and monitored in the integrated docking station. It handles climate control, telemetry and maintenance monitoring and thus ensures uninterrupted operation.
The result: less personnel effort, higher deployment frequency and significantly lower operating costs, especially for large, hard-to-see areas without permanent guard staffing.
